Learning to Speak Tamil

Learning Tamil as a second language

Learning a second language can be daunting for children, but with the right approach and materials, it can be made much easier. An effective way to learn any language is through implicit learning; that is, learning through experience and exposure. Young children learn a second language the same way they do their first: speaking it long before learning to read and write and doing so naturally with implicit learning. To ensure successful language acquisition, children should be exposed to the second language as much as possible in their everyday lives.

However, adults and older children are often taught a second language more formally. Language is learned through explicit learning, such as through vocabulary, language rules, and grammar. School-going children are exposed to this form of learning and easily adapt to this method of learning a second language.

Research shows a combination of both methods is very effective for children of all ages. The iPad app offered by Cognita LLC includes learning materials such as books, audio recordings, and videos in spoken Tamil. The app lets children interact with it, thus effectively combining both forms of teaching.
